After The Voice

Danielle Bradbery is back with a new country single

0
4 winner Danielle Bradbery released one of the most successful albums from a former Voice contestant to date.

Now she’s back with the lead single from her second album, the very pop-country sounding “Friend Zone.”

The result: 24 hours after its release on Friday, the new single had climbed to number 79 on iTunes’ overall singles chart and was sitting at number 17 on the country singles chart.

Earlier in the day, “Friend Zone” climbed as high as 15 on that chart.

It’ll be interesting to watch how the song does, for a number of reasons.

For starters, unless named Carrie Underwood or Miranda Lambert, female singers have trouble breaking into the rotation on country radio. Then there’s the fact that second albums — and singles from second albums — have proven to be major stumbling blocks for winners of TV singing competitions.

And, finally, in this case, the Danielle warning guys about the missteps that could land them in the friend zone sounds a whole lot sassier and edgier than the Danielle we heard on her 2013 debut album.

Danielle co-wrote the new single with Mikal Blue, Johan Lindbrandt and Shari Short.

And while some fans are criticizing it as going too far in the “pop” direction, most of the reaction on Danielle’s Facebook page has been positive.

A sampling:

* Scotty Mcburke: “I have it on repeat and it’s going to stay on repeat.”

* Diego Delapena: “It’s definitely my type of song! I love it!”

* Judy Tallant: “You could sing the phone book, and it would sound amazing.”

As for that sophomore album, there’s been no word yet on a release date.
