American Idol Season 14

Did Qaasim Middleton deserve the Idol save?

The American Idol judges did what I never dreamed they’d do Thursday night.

They used their only save of Season 14 on just the second elimination show of the season.

Qaasim Middleton was the lucky recipient, granted second life on the show after a frenetic performance of The Beatles “Come Together.”

Should the judges have used the save?

I don’t think so.

I’ve always felt the save should be preserved in case a potential winner winds up on the verge of elimination through some fluke – like when Jessica Sanchez needed rescued back in Season 11.

I can see why the judges were swept up in the moment. Qaasim clearly decided if he was going to leave the show, he was going to leave everything on the stage in a final performance.

He swung his dreads around. He stomped around like a singer possessed. He had all his Season 14 colleagues on their feet, cheering his performance.

But all this came a week after a woefully weak vocal. And, truth be told, the vocal wasn’t very consistent on “Come Together.”

And I can’t help wondering if the judges might need that save somewhere down the line when … oh, say a Joey Cook winds up in danger.

Or perhaps, Daniel Seavey.

Just joking.

On with a recap …

Best of the night: Speaking of Joey, she delivered it, turning in a truly haunting version of “Mad World.” Was it as good as Adam Lambert’s performance of the same song back in Season 8? No. But it was Joey’s

most “commercial” performance yet. And it was very, very good.

Runner-up: Clark Beckham showed off his range, had the young ladies screaming and had Harry proclaiming he “knocked it out of the park” after singing Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning.”

Also worthy of mention: Jax stumbled last week, but made a solid comeback with her sweet and quirky performance of “Grow Old with You,” a song performance by none other than Adam Sandler in “The Wedding Singer.”

Worst of the night: Daniel Seavey, again. He tired to sing “Lost Stars.” It was not pretty. The sooner Daniel is eliminated, the less embarrassing it will be for American Idol.

Please save them: Adanna Duru was asked to perform first, always a precarious spot to be in during a two-hour show. But she delivered sass, looked like a star and outsang most of the cast on Idol’s movie night. And Tyanna Jones had a rare off night, but shouldn’t pay the ultimate price.

Baffled by the judges: Somehow, Rayvon Owen got a worst critique from the judges than Daniel Seavey. I didn’t love his take on “Staying Alive,” but at least it didn’t make me cringe.

In danger next week: The Top 11 will face a double elimination. Daniel Seavey should not survive. Maddie Walker strayed from her country music roots Thursday and might pay the price.
