Idols on the Music Chart

Jessica Sanchez bumped from Billboard in a flash

Wondering why American Idol would want to release a Candice Glover debut album in mid-July, so soon after her crowning as Season 12 champ?

This might be one reason.

The new Billboard charts were released today.

And Jessica Sanchez’s debut album has disappeared from the Billboard 200, just three weeks after its release.

Clearly, waiting a year to release a finalist’s debut album is too long to wait at a time when The Voice and The X Factor are crowning competing champs in the interim.

Jessica’s album, “Me, You and the Music,” debuted at number 26 on the Billboard 200 back on May 9, the third-lowest debut ever for an Idol finalist.

The album dropped to 137 last week before dropping off entirely this week.

That amounts to a major flop for someone who figured to benefit from an album released at a time when Idol mania was at a fever pitch and timed to coincide with her appearance on “Glee.”

Not that X Factor winner Tate Stevens is faring a whole lot better.

His album debuted higher (number 18), but stayed on the Billboard 200 just three weeks before dropping off this week. His album is now number 36 on the country albums chart.

In contrast, Season 11 Idol winner Phillip Phillips’ debut album is still number 52 on the Billboard 200, 26 weeks after its release.

Other chart news of note this week:

* Fantasia’s fourth album, “Side Effects of You,” is number 24 on the Billboard 200, four weeks after its release. And it’s still number four on the R&B/hip-hop album chart.

* Idol winner Candice Glover’s single, “I am Beautiful,” checked in at number 93 on the Hot 100. Time will tell, but it’s unlikely to match the success of Phillip’s “Home” from Season 11.

* Speaking of Phillip, his second single — “Gone, Gone Gone” — advanced on the Hot 100, the digital singles chart, the adult pop song chart and the rock chart this week. It’s up to number seven among adult pop songs.
