(NBC Photo)His audition: Ryan Quinn, 25, of Westmoreland, N.Y., auditioned with Eric Clapton’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.” His remarkable range prompted Christina Aguilera to turn around in a heartbeat. By the time the performance ended, Ryan was the first guy on Season 10 to earn a four-chair turn. Christina said Ryan has a voice that needs to be heard. But Ryan went with Team Adam, despite voicing a pre-audition preference for Pharrell Williams.

His background: Ryan credits his dad for teaching him just about everything he knows about music. “My dad’s definitely the better musician,” he told The Voice. Ryan started his first band at age 15 and started playing solo at age 18. He says he’s always wanted to pursue music but “around here, making a living at it is almost impossible.” So he co-teaches music classes at the House of the Good Shepherd for children who have suffered trauma in their lives. “I love this job because I get to share my passion with kids to try and help them,” he said. Ryan has also battled Lyme Disease. After a rough couple of years, he says “it’s really now or never for pursuing music.”

What the show didn’t show:

  • According to his bio on The Voice website, Ryan plays several instruments and studied music business at the State University of New York (SUNY) Oneonta.
  • As a result of Lyme Disease, he still struggles with chronic fatique, the website says.
  • His website bio says he started his musical career as a drummer, but switched his focus to singing while in college.
  • While attending college, he spent three years as the lead singer of the SUCO Funk Band, which performed songs by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Tower of Power, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye
  • That gig allowed him to work with Spyro Gyra founding member and Grammy-nominated Jazz pianist/composer Jeremy Wall, who played keyboards for the band.
  • More recently, Ryan has been performing with family friend and guitarist Dave “Dinger” Wingfield. They play a wide range of music and have been working together on a debut EP, according to that web bio.
  • You can check out some of Ryan’s music, and a couple of performances from his college days, on this Soundcloud Page.
  • In a conference call with the media, Ryan explained his pre-audition preference for Pharrell, saying “he’s just such a well-rounded person and producer that — I don’t really know what category I fit into, I have always had trouble with that.”
  • So why did he wind up on Team Adam? “I just felt like Adam — we connected on musical influences, Jeff Buckley, and we have a similar singing style,” Ryan said. “He seemed really genuine and really passionate.”
  • On iTunes: Just his performance from The Voice.

I think Ryan Quinn was the best in Season 10 – i had to look up who won 10, but i am still listening to Ryan Quinn. What a voice. Range, dynamics, his tone, control – his ad-libs are perfect – never overdone and often surprising. I am really moved by how he sings. Ryan deserved to win it all. I want to buy his album. HIs singing makes me cry. I am a singer/songwriter and musician. A very good musician. I hope therefore, Ryan knows how exceptional he is. Thank you.
