Yep, that name is right, and he got the pimp spot on the Season 11 premiere of Idol, performing last and receiving high praise from the judges.

The 20-year-old is from Leesburg, Ga., and works in his dad’s pawn shop.  “It’s fun,” he says, “but kinda scary, too. You never know what’s going to walk through the door.”

Phillip might work there, but he got serious about music at age 14, according to an article in Albany Uncovered.  He says his primary musical influence is Dave Matthews, and he heads the Phillip Phillips band.  He plays the guitar, bass and piano and writes his own music.

And something we didn’t hear about on Idol — he also volunteers with a group called “Mission: Change,” which works to eradicate homelessness and hunger.

I wasn’t thrilled with his overblown vocal on “Superstition.”  He was far more impressive playing guitar and singing “Thriller.”  Jennifer called him “super special.”  Randy called him “amazing” and “a true artist.”

Given the past success of male singer-songwriters who play guitar on Idol, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see much more of this guy in Season 11.

Here are two pre-Idol performances from Phillip.

As soon as I heard his voice, and saw his akward movements during singing, I immediately thought; Dave Matthews. I knew that he had to have been influenced by Dave.
