Meet Joselyn Rivera of Team Christina on The Voice

A doctor prescribed music for Joselyn Rivera when she was 5 years old. Apparently, it worked.

On The Voice we learned that Joselyn, 17, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., was born premature and was in and out of hospitals when she was young.

By the time she was 5, she was painfully shy and falling behind her peers.

That’s when a doctor prescribed music as a way of bringing her out of her shell.

“We went right to a store to buy a Barbie karaoke,” said Joselyn, who recalls locking herself in her bedroom and practicing four hours a day. “I just blossomed after that.”

Says her Mom: “It brought her out of her shell.”

For her audition, Joselyn sang Kelly Clarkson’s smash hit “Stronger.”

And if she didn’t display Kelly Clarkson-like power on the song, she was impressive enough that Christina and Blake turned their chairs around.

“You’ve got it,” proclaimed Christina, who eventually snagged Joselyn for her team.

What the show didn’t show: Well, you wonder if young Joselyn wound up on the right show. On Facebook, she says her role model is X Factor judge Demi Lovato and her favorite band is Journey, which used to include Randy Jackson. On a more serious note, young Joselyn volunteers for a number of causes, including Easter Seals and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “If my singing can bring a smile to a child’s face, then that means everything to me,” she writes. She also sings in Spanish and says she recently signed a recording contract with Emilio Estefan. Her Voice bio tells us she likes to rollerblade in her spare time.
