Karla Davis, Season Two Contestants, The Voice

Meet Karla Davis of The Voice (Team Adam)

We only saw and heard a short snippet of Karla Davis’ audition on The Voice. Which is a shame, because she has an interesting story and a superb voice.

The 25-year-old from Monroe, N.C., focused on athletics growing up and earned a college scholarship in soccer to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

“I don’t have much background in music,” she told The Voice. “I’ve only been singing and playing guitar for about three years. All I knew my whole life was soccer.

“And, then, at the end of my senior year (of college), I didn’t have anything to do to fill my time, so I started singing and picked up guitar, and I could play by ear. It just worked.”

Still, it took friends dragging her to an open mic night in Greensboro and pushing her on stage before she got over her fear of singing in front of people.

But for a late starter, Karla has done pretty well.  She entered and won the national Colgate Country Challenge competition in 2010.

Later that year, she released a 10-track debut CD called “Here I Am.”  She’s been working on a followup, “360,” due for release sometime this year.

She’s an acoustic country artist, “but it’s also pretty soulful, I think,” Karla says of her music.  “Yeah, that’s me.  Country-soul.”
