Meagan McNeal will compete on Season 13 of The Voice.

When Meagan McNeal says her original music is an eclectic mix of genres, she’s being totally honest.

Her 2014 debut album “Mindset” includes the jazzy “Rainwalk,” a sassy cover of “Summertime” and a rap song called “Believin’.”

Now Meagan will be taking that musical diversity to Season 13 of The Voice.

According to her Facebook bio, Meagan first sang for an audience at age 9 at a wedding.

“I really wanted to be a bridesmaid, but my auntie was like, ‘Well, you can be in my wedding if you sing,’” she recalled in a 2015 interview with EncoreKalamazoo.com.

She sang Stevie Wonder’s “You and I,” and an aspiring musician was born.

And though she obtained her bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University in sales and business marketing, it’s also while she was a student there that she launched her solo career as a singer.

Her first solo performance was at Kalamazoo’s Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative.

“It was August 18, 2007,” she told EncoreKalamazoo. “I’ll never forget the date because that was the night I first thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, I can really do this and make a career out of this.’ It was the best 75 bucks I made in my life.”

She wound up interning at Hidden Beach Recordings in California and has since opened for the likes of will.i.am and the The Velvelettes. She’s also performed as a background singer with Eminem to the O’Jays, according to her Facebook bio. And she’s toured Europe.

More recently, she provided background vocals for a 2016 jazz album called “The Way We Play” from Marquis Hill and has been performing alongside new age poet and motivational speaker Harold Green. Check out the clips below; that vocal on “Love on the Brain” is especially impressive.

On Facebook, she classifies her music as neo-soul, jazz and R&B and says her influences include Ella Fitzgerald, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu.
