Music charts: Carrie outperforming newest Idols

Carrie Underwood's Play On has been among the top 10 on the Billboard 200 for five weeks.Let’s do a little comparison.

The most successful three Idol albums of 2009 have been from Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry and Carrie Underwood.

Kelly’s “All I Ever Wanted” debuted at number one, stayed there for two weeks and spent three weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard 200.

Daughtry’s “Leave This Town” also debuted at number one, spent two weeks at number two and a total of six weeks in the top 10.

Carrie’s “Play On” opened at number one, dropped to number nine two weeks later, but rebounded to number six this week, its fifth in the top 10.

This year’s top Idols?

Kris Allen’s debut probably isn’t going to crack the top 10. Not after opening at number 11, plummeting to number 35 last week and all the way to 52 this week.

And while Susan Boyle clings to number one for a second straight week on the Billboard 200, Adam Lambert took a mighty tumble this week, all the way from three to 22.

Bottom line: It’s hardly a promising start for Idol’s stars from season eight.

Elsewhere on the charts, the big mover this week is David Archuleta, whose Christmas album bolts from 52 to 34 on the Billboard 200. That makes it the third-highest charting Idol album this week, behind Carrie and Adam.

Here’s guessing he passes Adam next week. And, don’t forget, David plays the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore on Tuesday. Follow the Idols in Our Area link at right to get ticket information.

Now, for the complete rundown of Idols on the music charts this week.

Kris Allen: The album is fading, but the single, “Live Like We’re Dying” is showing life on the Hot 100, moving up from 47 to 44 this week.

David Archuleta: In addition to the big jump on the Billboard 200, David’s “Christmas From the Heart” moves up a spot, from 10 to nine, on the holiday album chart.

Kelly Clarkson: Speaking of “All I Ever Wanted,” its still 143 on the Billboard 200 eight months after its release. And the third single, “Already Gone,” is doing quite well, thank you — number 13 on the Hot 100 (up one spot), number five among pop songs (up one spot), number eight among radio songs and, once again, number one among adult pop songs.

Daughtry: “Life After You,” the band’s second single from the new album, debuts at number 66 on the Hot 100. The album drops from 62 to 68 on the Billboard 200. Album number one is number 195. And single number one from album number two, “No Surprise,” is still number eight among adult contemporary songs.

Allison Iraheta's first album hits the charts at number 35.Allison Iraheta: Her debut album, “Just Like You,” lands at number 35 for its Billboard debut. No sign of the first single, “Friday I’ll Be Over U.”

Adam Lambert: “For Your Entertainment,” the album, drops from number three to number 22. “For Your Entertainment,” the song, is no longer among the Hot 100.

Kellie Pickler: Her second album is one of the biggest gainers on the country CD chart, jumping from 35 to 32. Her latest single, “Didn’t Know How Much I Loved You,” slips from 25 to 28 among country singles.

Jordin Sparks: A couple of weeks ago, “S.O.S. (Let the Music Play)” was the top dance club song on the Billboard charts. This week, it slips from 13 to 15.

Carrie Underwood: “Play On” is still number two on the country album chart, right behind Taylor Swift’s “Fearless.” “Cowboy Casanova” is 28 on the Hot 100, a drop of four spots from a week ago; the song drops from four to six among country singles.
