Good news, Michael Johns’ fans. He’ll have a new album out this spring.
Michael and Carly Smithson sang “The Letter” together on American Idol’s results show Wednesday night. And Michael shared the good news about his album, though he didn’t provide a specific release date.
Meanwhile, Michael said his new single, “Heart on My Sleeve” will be released in a couple of weeks. You can hear a snippet of the new single here.
As for his album, he told USA Today he’s recording it independently, though it will be distributed by Sony/ATV.
The appearance on Idol Wednesday was apparently a bit of a make-good, according to a press release sent out by Michael Johns Online earlier this week.
You see, Michael and Carly served as boot camp mentors for this year’s aspiring Idols during Hollywood Week. They sort of expected to be seen on one of this year’s Hollywood Week episodes.
But, well, there’s only so much air time, and it has to be reserved for the really dramatic moments.

Bikini Girl got tired right before group performance because she’d been in high heels all day. She went to bed, covered her head and nearly missed out on her last moment in the Idol spotlight.
And Tatiana kept crying and shrieking and had trouble deciding which group she’d wreck.
Bottom line: Michael and Carly wound up on the cutting room floor. “And thus, the duet plans were hatched,” says Michael’s press release.
Michael’s been pretty busy since his Idol run. Anyone who can’t wait for his upcoming album might want to check out the “Don’t Look Down” soundtrack, released Jan. 20 and filled with Michael Johns’ music.

And Carly? No word on new music from her. At least not during tonight’s show.
