Ponciano Seoane talks about a battle we didn’t see on The Voice

Seoane and Elia Esparza had to sell themselves as a romantic couple during The Voice battle round this week, knowing all the while they’d be separated when the performance ended.

After all, Adam Levine had them singing the Ed Sheeran love ballad “Tenerife Sea.”

As it turned out, Ponciano was selected to advance to the knockout round following a performance that was montaged, meaning viewers saw just a few seconds of it. Elia, the 23-year-old aspiring pop singer based in New York, was eliminated from the show.

“We definitely had romantic vibe,” Ponciano said, looking back on the performance during a Wednesday conference call with the media. “We thought it was an amazing song. He (Ed Sheeran) really makes you feel what he’s saying and singing, and we definitely brought that to life on stage. We sang to each other, and the audience — we made them feel like we were in love.”

As for the outcome, Ponciano admitted he’s not quite sure what turned the tide in his favor, because Elia performed very well too and they both got positive feedback from The Voice coaches.

“I can’t really speak for Adam. I think he just had to go with his gut. I thought we both did a very good good job.”

Ponciano, 25 when he tried out, earned a spot on the show when he sang the Phillip Phillips’ hit “Home” during his blind audition. His vocals prompted chair turns from the only two coaches with spots left on their teams, Miley Cyrus and Adam.

He choose to join Team Adam and said the Maroon 5 frontman has already passed along some invaluable advice.

“Working with Adam, he’s provided lots of good tips and pointers,” Ponciano said. “I think one thing he recognized that I did already really well was connect with a song and then be able to show that emotion to the audience.

“One thing he has helped me on is a lot of breath control. Especially for the big moments. Being on The Voice, you have a lot of big moments in your songs. You try to find those moments that the audience can really, really see what you can do. A lot of those moments require taking a lot of breath in because you’re holding out big notes, you’re doing a lot of vocal runs and stuff like that.

“For me, I definitely don’t consider myself one of the most talented vocalists on the show, so he helped me understand what makes somebody a better vocalist.”
