Danny Gokey turns in one solid performance after another

Matt Giraud is still around, thanks to the judges' saveReady for some disco?

Our Idols better be, because two of them will be eliminated this week thanks to last week’s save of Matt Giraud.

All of our contestants were born after the dawn of disco, but the theme is hardly new to Idol fans.

It was used in seasons two and three and might as well have been a theme week in season four (dance music from the ’70s) and season seven (songs by Barry Gibbs).

Past victims of the theme have included LaToya London (season three), Anwar Robinson (season four) and LaKisha Jones (season six).

As long as Allison Iraheta doesn’t join that list, I might even forgive the judges for last week’s lunacy.

Lil Rounds' version of The Rose didn't go over well with SimonHere are the rankings, heading into week seven.

7. Matt Giraud (seventh last week): I’m still trying to remember a single memorable performance Matt has turned in that made him save-worthy. And I’m drawing a blank. A couple of solid performances? Sure. Memorable? Can’t come up with one. Can anyone out there help?

6. Lil Rounds (sixth last week): Lil probably wishes she had gotten judged by Randy and Kara last week rather than Paula and Simon. I mean, what did she wind up with? Nonsense from Paula and another bashing from Simon. My guess is, she’s gone this week, no matter what she chooses to sing.

5. Anoop Desai (fifth last week): Anoop has excelled when he has slowed things down, like with last week’s splendid version of Anoop Desai turned in a solid effort and still wound up in the bottom three“Everything I Do, I Do For You,” or week two’s “You’re Always on My Mind.” Meaning this could be a tricky week for him. Remember, he’s been in the bottom three for three straight weeks and was just 30,000 votes from elimination two weeks ago.

4. Danny Gokey (fourth last week): There’s a ton of distance on the list between number four and number five. But come to think of it, I’m not sure Danny has turned in a particulary memorable performance either. What has he done? Week in and week out, he’s been consistenty solid. But can Danny disco? We’re about to find out.

3. Allison Iraheta (third last week): She got a vote of confidence last week when Simon said he could see her making the finals. And it was well deserved. This 16-year-old has been the surprise of season eight. Song Kris Allen has yet to wind up in the bottom threechoice suggestion: Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero.” Fantasia was able to pass it off as a disco song in season three. And another Bonnie Tyler tune, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” helped Allison win “Quincenera” two years ago.

2. Kris Allen (second last week): Kris overcame a lack of pre-semifinal airtime to become the other surprise of season eight. And he seems to have a more solid fan base than Allison. Not a single visit to the bottom three yet, in spite of some rather harsh reviews the last two weeks.

1. Adam Lambert (1st since the season began): Adam and disco? I can’t imagine it will be a problem. Adam loves theatrics and over-the-top performances. And this theme week is just begging for one. My guess: He’ll once again turn in the night’s top Adam Lambert interacts with the crowd during last week's showperformance.

One thing I wouldn’t have guessed about Adam: On American Idol Extra last week, host Jillian Reynolds asked the contestants which of them is the camp counselor, the contestant others turn to for advice. Nearly everyone pointed to Adam. Nice. Very nice.
