Red Marlow approached Season 13 of The Voice with a very simple game plan: Sing traditional country music each and every week.

You might say it’s worked out pretty well for the guy who was 22 when he moved to Nashville to pursue a career in country music and 40 when he auditioned for the show.

Even his Top 8 performance of “Go Rest High on That Mountain” was planned well in advance, Red told Hollywood Junket.

“I had that song in my back pocket ever since I started doing the show,” Red told the site. “I always said, ‘If I get to the Top 8, this song would be the one, in my opinion, to get me to the Top 4.

“Pretty much every song I’ve done has been planned out the whole way,” he added. “(Coach) Blake (Shelton) was just cool enough to let me work my plan. He loves the music I do too.”

Actually, it took an instant save to get Red to the Top 4, but his instincts about “Go Rest High on That Mountain” certainly weren’t wrong. The song landed at number five on iTunes, giving Red his first Top 10 hit.

Now he’ll be going up against Chloe Kohanski, Addison Agen on Brooke Simpson for the Season 13 title Monday night.

Not bad for a guy who had stepped away from music for a while to start his own construction company.

Here’s a look back at Red’s performances on The Voice.
