A couple of weeks ago, I wondered whether Sawyer Fredericks would be able to challenge Jordan Smith’s record for the best selling post-Voice debut album ever.

Hardly.

The Season 8 champion of The Voice landed at number two on the Billboard folk album chart and at number five on Billboard’s rock albums chart with “A Good Storm.”

But with first-week sales of just 11,000 copies, “A Good Storm” entered the Billboard 200 at a very modest number 48.

I wonder how much that was affected by last November’s release of an EP featuring four of the 10 songs on “A Good Storm.” Billboard reports that the EP sold 9,000 copies in its first week.

In contrast, Season 9 winner Jordan Smith debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 54,000.

Before that, Melanie Martinez had scored the highest Billboard debut; her “Cry Baby” album entered that chart at number six. And Cassadee Pope had the best first-week sales, moving 43,000 copies of her “Frame by Frame” album in 2013.

Sawyer has been touring the western U.S. with fellow Season 8 teen sensation Mia Z. They have one more show left on that tour, tonight in Phoenix, Ariz.
