He showed up on The Voice stage in February at age 15, singing “Man of Constant Sorrow” and prompting all four coaches to turn their chairs.

The performance wound up being the most successful on iTunes. Boy was that a sign of things to come.

Sawyer Fredericks ended up being the only four-chair turn recipient to make The Voice finals.

He also wound up being the only contestant to make it that far with his original team.

And, Tuesday night, he became the Season 8 Voice champ, an outcome that surprised no one.

In fact, he was so popular over his run on the show, he entered the finals as the most overwhelming favorite The Voice has had.

He performed nine solos during the finals; all nine hit the Top 10 on iTunes. Four of the songs hit number two.

No other contestant in the finale cracked the Top 10 on iTunes more than four times.

“To have America embrace my music and embrace me the way they have has been amazing,” Sawyer said on Tuesday’s season finale. “I almost don’t know what to say. I can say ‘thank you,’ but it’s just not enough.”

If there was any suspense Tuesday night, it was seeing who would finish second.

That honor went to Meghan Linsey, the former star of the country duet Steel Magnolia who turned to The Voice looking for a solo career as a soul singer.

Rounding out the Top 4 were Joshua Davis in third place and Koryn Hawthorne in fourth place.
