The Voice results show: 2 earn saves, 4 go home

0

So, we’ll have more performances tonight.

After we learn which three contestants have been saved by fan voting, the remaining three contestants from each team will compete hoping to earn a judges’ save.

That means by the end of the night, we’ll have eight survivors and four contestants heading home.

If you saw the iTunes chart performances earlier today, Lindsey Pavao, RaeLynn and Charlotte Sometimes can probably breathe easy.

They were all doing better on the single downloads chart than Jesse Campbell, the guy the judges said was the contestant to beat.

And here are the contestants who are safe …

Team Blake:   Erin Willett, Jermaine Paul and RaeLynn.  Good job on the first two, America.  How in the world could RaeLynn be chosen over Charlotte Sometimes?  Naia Kete and Jordis Unga are also at risk of elimination.

Team Christina:   Jesse Campbell, Lindsey Pavao and Chris Mann advance to the next round.  That means Ashley De La Rosa should get the save.

Now, the save-me performances …

Naia Kete:  She’s singing “If I Were a Boy.”  Weak opening in my opinion.  You could barely make out Naia over the background music.  She did much better on the chorus.  But that wasn’t especially memorable with her Voice fate on the line.  Blake says he would have liked her to sing reggae.  Strange.  Last night, he wanted her to show her versatility.  Grade: C.

Charlotte Sometimes:   She’ll perform the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris.”  That wasn’t as strong as her performance last night, which might leave an opening for Jordis or Naia.  I still think Charlotte has a distinct tone.  And that should count for a lot on a show called The Voice. Grade: B-

Jordis Unga:  She’ll perform “Wild Horses.”  She looks great.  Very nice opening.  But she hit a seriously bum note in the chorus of that song that detracted from the performance.  Still, it was better than her version of “Alone” last week.  Grade: B

Christina, Cee Lo and Adam say they would all save Jordis.  And Blake decides to save Jordis Unga.  That means Naia Kete and Charlotte Sometimes — who turned in one of the best performances last night — go home from Team Blake.

Ashley De La Rosa:  She’ll sing “Paris Ooh La La.”  And again, Ashley is rocking it out.  Impressive.  She’s 17, and this is an absolutely pressure-filled performance, but she shows no sign of feeling that pressure.  Very well done. Grade: B+

Sera Hill:  She’ll sing “Vision of Love.”  I was about to say that was another sleepy performance from Sera, but she poured on the big notes and the passion at the end.  Still not sure there’s anything particularly distinctive about her voice.  Grade: C+

Moses Stone:  He’ll perform “Breaking to Pieces.”  Start rapping, Moses.  Please.  Seriously, his singing voice just doesn’t match up well to the other contestants on this show, not even to the other two team members who are singing for the save.  Grade: D.

Cee Lo says he would save Sera.  Adam would save Ashley.  So would Blake.  And Christina saves Ashley De La Rosa.  Wise choice.

Recap:

America votes:  And got it perfect on Team Christina. Three excellent selections.  And got two of three right on Team Blake.  Five out of six.  Not bad, voters.

Most baffling:   RaeLynn’s a cute young woman and an excellent performer.  But I didn’t enjoy her vocal in the battle round or Monday’s performance.  Apparently she’s appealing to someone.  Last time I checked, her performance from Monday was the second-most downloaded among all the contestants.

Most disappointing:  The loss of Charlotte Sometimes, who entered the competition with an impressive catalogue of music releases and had one of the show’s more distinctive voices.  I thought her performance Monday was the best.  Yet she’s going home.   Keep singing, Charlotte.

Best decision:  Saving young Ashley De La Rosa.   I figured she was cannon fodder on Team Christina.  She turned out to be anything but.  She took the stage twice and she commanded the stage twice.  This young lady is ready to rock, right into the quarterfinals.
