Nina Daig of American Idol Season 23

Idol officially kicked off Season 23 on March 9 with Carrie Underwood joining Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie at the judges’ table.

Auditions will continue to air Sunday nights on ABC until Hollywood Week begins.

Here’s more about Nina.

* She’s a singer-songwriter from central Virginia who admits to limited performance experience.

* But she’s releasing her first single — a song called “Milk Carton Girl” — on March 30, something she says she never thought would happen.

* “I’ve written hundreds of songs, and I never thought a single one of them would be heard. I never thought I would have the confidence to sing in front of anyone, especially my own songs,” Nina writes on Instagram.

* What changed is that last year, she sent a video to American Idol, “not expecting to hear back.”

* She heard back. In fact, her audition is among those scheduled to air this Sunday.

* “Auditioning for the judges changed my life,” she says. “It made me realize I’m capable of hard things and that the words I keep private might actually make a difference in the world.”

* As for her music, beside a photo of her sitting in a pickup truck wearing boots, Nina writes “less yeehaw, more country adjacent.”

* Nina also credits husband Tyler for encouraging her to pursue her love of music. For a while, she says he was the only person she felt comfortable singing for.

* And it sure sounds like their September 23 wedding would make a great song. It was scheduled for outdoors. It rained 6 inches that day. The power kept going out. Nina’s favorite dog went missing.

* “My wedding dress is still hung up in my closet covered in mud and I’m never going to have it cleaned. It was not perfect, but it was still the best day of my life,” Nina writes.
