Megan Joy

A musical surprise courtesy of Season 8’s Megan Joy

Every May you can count on a rash of new CDs from former Idols timed to coincide with heightened interest in the show as a new finale approaches.

But this one was a surprise. A surprise of the most pleasant sort.

Megan Joy promised us “a beautiful album” when she launched a kickstarter campaign to help support it last summer.

Late last week she delivered — a 9-track effort simply titled “Meg Joy.”

Not all nine of the tracks work for me. But two-thirds of them do.

And as inconsistent as Megan was back in Season 8 when she finished ninth, this EP certainly validates her talent.

She sounds absolutely fabulous on a throwback tune called “Longing.”

Feeling down? Check out a catchy little pop called “Can’t Bring Me Down.” It’s sure to brighten your mood.

Those are just a couple of highlights. Check it out here. (And, for convenience sake, I’ve embedded a couple YouTube versions below.)

To steal a line from the aforementioned pop tune, I think you find your toes tapping to Megan’s slightly quirky beat.

Now, the tunes …

“Can’t Bring Me Down”

“Trouble Me”
