Idols at awards shows

Five Idol reasons to watch the Billboard Music Awards

0

American Idol fans will have at least five reasons to watch the Billboard Music Awards this weekend.

That’s because two former Idol champs — Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood — are among an all-star cast of performers slated to sing on the show.

And that’s because three other former Idol finalists — Scotty McCreery, Jennifer Hudson and Mandisa — are up for awards.

In terms of performers, Carrie and Kelly join a cast that also includes Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Usher and — just announced — Katy Perry, who will apparently sing a brand new song.

Among nominees, Scotty is the only Idol with more than one nomination. He’s up for the awards for best new artist and best country album.

Mandisa’s hit single “Stronger” (not to be confused with Kelly’s hit single of the same name) is up for Christian song of the year.

And Jennifer’s second album, “I Remember Me,” is up for R&B album of the year.

You won’t be surprised to learn that the artist with the most nominations is Adele with a staggering 18. Close behind, LMFAO with 17 (really?) and Rihanna with 13.

The fun starts Sunday at 8 p.m. on ABC. Check back then. I’ll be sure to post photos from the show.

Here’s a look at the nominated Idols and their competition:

Best New Artist: Other nominees besides Scotty include Bad Meets Evil, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and Foster the People.

Best Country Album: Other nominees besides Scotty’s “Clear As Day” include Jason Aldean’s “My Kinda Party,” The Band Perry’s self-titled debut album, Luke Bryans “Tailgates and Tanlines” and Lady Antebellum’s “We Own the Night.”

Best R&B album: Other nominees besides Jennifer’s “I Remember Me” include Beyonce’s “4,” Mary J. Blige’s “My Life II,” Chris Brown’s “F.A.M.E.” and Rihanna’s “Talk That Talk.”

Best Christian Song: Other nominees besides Mandisa’s “Stronger” include Casting Crowns’ “Glorious Days,” Jamie Grace’s “Hold Me,” Laura Story’s “Blessings,” and Matthew West’s “Strong Enough.”
