I read an interview in which Jordin Sparks wondered if people would still care about her music after six years without an album.

The answer: Die-hard fans care, clearly. Her Facebook page is full of praise for “Right Here, Right Now,” which hit iTunes Aug. 21.

The general public apparently doesn’t care nearly as much, based on the Billboard charts released this week.

Jordin’s new album landed at 161 on the Billboard 200.

Ouch.

To put that in perspective, 20 new albums did better. Carrie Underwood released a greatest hits album 10 months ago. You figure most people who want it have it by now. It was number 90 on the Billboard 200.

Back in 2007, Jordin’s self-titled first album debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum, signifying sales of more than 1 million. That, of course, came on the heels of her Season 6 triumph on American Idol.

Her followup album, “Battlefield,” was released two years later and debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 and went gold, signifying sales of more than 500,000 albums.

Meanwhile, Melanie Martinez’s “Cry Baby” album dropped to number 26 in its second week on the Billboard 200.

The album debuted at number six last week with sales of about 40,000 copies. That’s the best debut ever in terms of chart position for an artist coming off The Voice.
