Cori Kennedy of The Voice Season 28

Cori Kennedy of The Voice Season 28

Her audition: Cori Kennedy, 28, of Kasson, Minn., performed “Why Not Me” by The Judds. Cori immediately showed off a wonderful country voice. Before she hit the chorus, Reba McEntire and Michael Buble turn. Cori has a nice little rasp in her voice too and plenty of vocal firepower. But the other coaches stay put. Cori then graced the coaches with a clever original about appearing on The Voice. Reba complimented Cori’s power and her tone. Michael said she sounds like a mix of country and Stevie Nicks. Cori opted to join Team Reba.

Here’s more about Cori.

* She’s a 28-year-old singer-songwriter from Kasson, Minnesota with music already released.

* That music includes a pair of singles — “Hey Who Shot the Water Tower” and “Lawless” — released in March.

* The former has more than 225,000 streams on Spotify and Cori’s TikTok on the song has been viewed an astounding 16 million times.

* It probably helps that the song is based on a hillarious true story, the shooting of a water tower — “in a sensitive area” — in Kingsland, Ark., in 2022. The water tower features a silouette of Johnny Cash; you can probably figure out what the sensitive area was.

* Cori wrote the song in the style of Johnny Cash, describing it as “exactly something he would write about.”

* Cori is a graduate of Kasson-Mantorville High School and a 2019 graduate of Minnesota State Universiy.

* She played softball and basketball in high school and was a standout as a catcher at Minnesota State. In 2017, she started all 71 games the team played en route to winning the NCAA Division II championship.

* As for her original music, you can check out much more on her social media, including a song about her motorcycle riding grandma and another about a handsome outlaw who wants to shoot a sheriff for sport.

* “I draw inspiration from my roots, my family, and the heart of my local community,” Cori writes on her website. “With every song, I aim to share a piece of real life — the ups, the downs, and the quiet moments in between.”
