We didn’t really meet Katherine Winston during the New York audition episode of American Idol.

Which is a shame, because when I was researching contestants rumored to do well this year, her original music was among the most impressive.

Particularly a song called “Black Rose,” which she posted to SoundCloud last spring and which I’ve embedded below.

Don’t remember Katherine from the New York episode?

She’s the 18-year-old from Lenox, Ma., who delivered a wonderfully soulful version of The Civil Wars’ “If I Didn’t Know Better” while we watched lots of contestants fail to snag a golden ticket.

According to her local FOX station, Katherine was just 11 when she picked up a guitar. By age 15, she decided to try homeschooling while pursuing her dream of a music career.

She’s a singer-songwriter with a number of impressive originals you can check out on SoundCloud, ReverbNation and her YouTube channel.

She’s performed mostly in the northeast, often accompanied by her father on guitar/mandolin and her sister, Sarah, as a backup singer, according to her Facebook bio.

Katherine lists Norah Jones, Johnny Cash, The Civil Wars, Miranda Lambert and Damien Rice as major musical influences.

Here are some Katherine links, followed by a couple samples of her music.
