Which former contestant sang on the Idol results show two weeks ago, when the theme was music from the movies?
The answer is Jennifer Hudson, of course. But if you didn’t know, all you’d have to do is take a look at Billboard’s Hot 200 albums chart to find out.
Time and again this season, former contestants performing on the show have seen their albums bolt up that Billboard chart the following week.
This week, Jennifer’s Grammy-winning debut album, released 29 weeks ago, made the biggest jump on the Hot 200, soaring from number 103 to number 42.
Her album climbed a more modest six spots, from 23 to 17 on the R&B/Hip-Hop album chart. And she still has two singles — “If This Isn’t Love” (number 10) and “Spotlight” (number 33) — among the top 50 R&B singles.
The true test of the Idol magic comes this week, when Taylor Hicks sings on the results show. His second album disappeared from the top 100 in just two weeks. If any former Idol needs a dose of that magic, it’s Taylor.
Here’s what the other Idols did on the charts this week:
* Speaking of staying power, Carrie Underwood’s 2007 album “Carnival Ride” certainly has it. The album is number 17 this week on the Top 200, down one spot from last week. It remains number five on the country album charts.
Her latest single, “I Told You So,” a duet with Randy Travis, is number 37 among the top singles in the land, down from 29 last week. But it climbed a spot, from number five to number four, on the country singles chart.
* Speaking of country Idols, Kellie Pickler’s second album picked up considerable steam after her appearance on the show. It’s number 25 on the country albums chart.
Her latest single, “Best Days of Your Life” nudged up from number 50 to number 48 on the top singles chart and from 27 to 24 on the country singles chart.
* Speaking of former Idols who appeared on the show this year, David Cook’s self-titled debut album continues to hang in among the top 50 on the Billboard Top 200. It’s number 47 this week, down from 28.
He has two of the top 20 singles on the Billboard chart for Hot Contemporary Adult Tracks — “Time of My Life” at number seven and “Light On” at number 16.
* Speaking of former Idol winners, Kelly Clarkson’s single “My Life Would Suck Without You” is losing a little steam, slipping from 11 to 13 among Billboard’s Hot 100 songs. But it remains in the top 10 on the Pop 100, Pop Airplay and Top 40 charts.
And, have no fear, the second single off her “All I Ever Wanted” album is hot on “MLWSWY”‘s heels. “I Do Not Hook Up,” co-written by Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, is number 36 this week on the Pop 100. The album: number 17 on the Hot 200.
* Speaking of … oh, heck, I can’t find a suitable transition this time. Anyway, Mandisa’s single, “My Deliverer,” is proving an inspirational success. It moved up from 13 to 11 this week on the top Christian songs chart.
