With its ratings in the toilet, The Voice is forging ahead with its Battle of Champions.

And this week, the show unveils the most stupid of the many stupid gimmicks in the 29 seasons of The Voice.

It’s called the All-Star showdown. And it will mean the return of several former Voice standouts for special knockout style matches.

Their return isn’t the problem.

Hey, it’ll be fun to see past champs like Jake Hoot, Girl Named Tom (singing for Team Kelly), Jordan Smith and Javier Colon (singing for Adam) and former finalist Renzo back on The Voice stage.

The problem lies in the purpose.

The coach who wins the most all-star showdowns will get a second spot in the Season 29 finale.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Each coach will send one singer to the finale. The coach who wins the all-star showdown will send a second singer to the finale.

So The Voice isn’t going to award the final spot in the finale to the most deserving singer.

The Voice isn’t going to allow the contestants to determine their own fate by delivering superlative performances.

The Voice isn’t going to allow the performances of the Season 29 semifinalists play any role whatsoever in determining the fourth finalists.

Instead, their fate will be in the hands of singers who haven’t appeared on the show for years.

And in the hands of CeeLo Green, who failed to coach a singer to victory in his four seasons on the show and hasn’t been coach since Season 5.

Because, hey, this is the Battle of Champions.

Yep, all of that makes so, so much sense.

If you’re still watching The Voice, please support that talented artists on the show. I think a finale featuring Alexia Jayy, Syd Millevoi and Liv Ciara would be a ton of fun.

Just remember, you won’t have any say in the outcome either.

As I reported long ago, Season 29 will also be the first ever in Voice history to to feature a single live show or a single voting show for the fans at home.

No wonder those ratings are plummeting.
