Idol judges scour L.A. for the golden ticket worthy

So, have you checked out the new Danny Gokey music video? If not, you should. Go here for the link.

Have you heard about Kellie Pickler and her hair problems? If not, go here to learn how she solved them and stopped looking like a scarecrow?

Oh, and did you hear that one of this year’s American Idol semifinalists got disqualified from the competition because his father talked to a local newspaper about his son’s success on the show?

Well, I promised when the audition episodes began that this blog would be a no-spoiler zone, so I’m not going to name the contestant.

But if you want to learn more, head here.

So, the L.A. auditions begin with a smart guy named Neil Goldstein who wants to sing a Meat Loaf song — which is a challenge in itself — even if you can remember the words, which this guy is having trouble with.

Poor Avril Lavigne gets a strange introduction to the Idol judging gig, huh? But speaking of strange, what it that she’s wearing?

An auditioner in Los Angeles has a message for Simon. (FOX Photo)And the promo shots for the rest of the episode have me worried. I’d really like to spend more time tonight watching the talented singers we’ll be seeing in the weeks to come and less time watching contestants who aren’t serious contestants.

Speaking of which, I have to introduce readers to Crystal Bowersox, one of the gals who won a golden ticket in Chicago, but whom we didn’t hear at all last week. Talk about a strong contestant!

OK, so we get our first golden ticket recipient from Los Angeles, a worship pastor named Jim Ranger from Bakersfield, Calif., who just did the nearly impossible — he got a golden ticket singing an original song for the judges. A tune called “Drive” if I caught it correctly.

Don’t you wish contestants got to sing an original song on Idol for one theme week? I sure do.

Then we might better appreciate the talent of a Michael Johns, Brooke White or Amanda Overmyer, just to mention three season seven Idols who released splendid albums full of originals they wrote in the past year. If you haven’t heard their albums, you should check them out.

Hmm, we might have just met this year’s female rocker. I mean, every season of Idol has to have one, right? Mary Powers, with an 8-year-old daughter who adores Simon, wows the judges with a version of Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield.”

Well, the little devil Avril has departed. The second half of the show will feature guest judge Katy Perry, the gal who performed last year with Adam Lambert’s name emblazoned on her cape.

Hey, it’s only fair that Katy see a strange audition to start off the day after what Avril went through, right?

Was that crying girl, who just tried out and get rejected? I had heard she auditioned this year.

Andrew GarciaOK, that’s better, Idol. Finally, at 8:40 p.m., we hear from another very talented singer, a guy named Andrew Garcia, 23, of Moreno Valley, Calif. The blue bar identified him as a musician.

OK, just checked out Andrew on MySpace. There’s not much there, but he doesn’t mind playing benefit shows. Past gigs have included a Typhoon Ondoy Relief Benefit Show in October in Long Beach, Calif., and a Fight the Poverty ’09 benefit concert and fashion show in Walnut, Calif.

And now we hear from a talented gal, Tasha Layton, a personal assistant and minister … hmm, that’s two ministers among four golden ticket recipients we’ve seen.

Tasha, 26, of Granada Hills, Calif., thrilled the judges with a performance of “Baby, Baby, Baby.”

To be followed by a performance I’m pretty sure I could have lived without.

Just four minutes left, let’s see what Idol delivers for a show-ender tonight.

Idol gives us Chris Golightly, who might be displaying the best voice of the night. Didn’t he make it to Hollywood in a previous season? The name seems familiar.

Loved the banter between Katy and Kara.

Oh well, just one more audition episode to go. Dallas tomorrow night.

In a few, I’ll blog providing more info on some of tonight’s contestants.
