From an American Idol standpoint, this week’s Billboard music charts are more notable for who’s not there than who is.
For instance:
* Scotty McCreery’s debut album dropped out of the Billboard 200 and out of the top 30 on the country album chart for the first time since its release last October.
* Adam Lambert’s second album, “Trespassing,” departed from the Billboard 200 after just 10 weeks. It had debuted at number one.
* Jessica Sanchez’s Idol EP has also dropped out of the Billboard 200.
In the case of Scotty, there’s more cause to celebrate than fret.
His “Clear As Day” debut gave Idol a hit album from a winner at a time the show badly needed it.
The debut albums from Season 8 winner Kris Allen and Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze were sales flops compared to their predecessors.
Scotty’s album has gone platinum — the first winner to hit 1 million in sales since Season 7’s David Cook — and stayed on the Billboard 200 for 42 weeks.
There’s more reason to fret for Adam, who told Billboard in a mid-May interview that he was hoping “Trespassing” would prove he wasn’t a one-hit wonder.
His debut album, “For Your Entertainment,” sold more than 800,000 copies and stayed on the Billboard 200 for 51 weeks.
“Trespassing” has sold less than 150,000 in the U.S. and is off that chart after just 10 weeks.
Ouch.
The one bright spot for Adam: His second single from the album, “Never Close Your Eyes,” is quickly heading up Billboard’s dance/club play chart.
This week it’s number 14, up four spots from a week ago.
In Jessica’s case, you have to wonder what the lukewarm response to her Idol EP means about her future album sales.
Idol released EPs for each of the top five this year. Jessica’s is the second to be bumped from the Billboard 200; the EPs featuring the songs of Phillip Phillips, Joshua Ledet and Skylar Laine are still on the chart.
Somewhat surprising, since it was Jessica who went head-to-head with Phillip for the Season 11 crown.
Of course, Jessica got a turkey of a song (“Change Nothing”) to sing in the Idol finale while Phillip was blessed with “Home” as his first single.
Here’s this week’s complete chart rundown.
