American Idol ratings slipped slightly Wednesday night, which has to be pretty disappointing for producers since it marked the first true performance episode of Season 15.

But tonight’s ratings will likely be most watched. That’s because this is the night former Idol stars return to the stage.

We’ll get to watch Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Scotty McCreery, Caleb Johnson, Nick Fradiani and Lauren Alaina share the spotlight with this year’s crop of aspiring singers.

If anything is going to draw back some of those old viewers, this is it.

Of course, from a Season 15 perspective, the night’s big news will be what happens at the end of the show, when the judges cut five contestants.

Some singers — like MacKenzie Bourg and La’Porsha Renae — have little to worry about. Heck, the original Idol — Ms. Kelly Clarkson — has already declared La’Porsha as the singer who should win Season 15.

Here’s what Kelly tweeted after La’Porsha sang “Proud Mary” last night: “Okay if @laporsharenae doesn’t win Idol there’s something seriously wrong w/America! I mean, goodness! I stood up n my house, that’s right!”

Well, Kelly, that might be a little premature, but La’Porsha has been impressive every time we’ve seen her perform.

Who should be worried?

That list would begin with another early front-runner, Emily Brooke, after a subpar cover of Cassadee Pope’s “I Am Invincible.”

Emily responded by tweeting out a link to her rehearsal, which seemed to go a bit better, and with this message to fans: “super disappointed of my performance but want to thank those standing by me & being super supportive.”

She also got a very classy response from Cassadee, who tweeted: “Sweet @emilybrooke. Honored that you covered #IAMINVINCIBLE on @AmericanIdol tonight. Your journey has just begun!”

Oh, and you can add to the worried list the names of Jordan Sasser, James VIII, Stephany Negrete and Jenna Renae, though I thought the latter two ladies performed quite well Wednesday.

I fear Stephany might be in trouble because she and Sonika Vaid are so similar in look and style, and the judges are more taken with Sonika. Jenna simply hasn’t gotten nearly the airtime of most other contestants; that’s usually not a good sign.

For the record: If I was making the cuts, I’d eliminate Jordan Sasser, James VIII, Thomas Stringfellow, Gianna Isabella and Emily Brooke and keep both Stephany and Jenna for at least another round.
