The third try at American Idol proved the charm for Caleb Johnson.
He made the Hollywood round in Season 10. He came within a whisker of the semifinals before flubbing his final Vegas performance in Season 11.
So the then-23-year-old from Asheville, N.C., turned out for the Idol auditions last summer determined to show the judges how much he’d improved.
After all, he’d been honing his skills performing with a band called Elijah Hooker, which specialized in “hard rock and roll with a whole lotta soul.”
Improved indeed. Come 8 p.m. Tuesday night, Caleb will be vying with Jena Irene for the Season 13 American Idol crown.
