Blake Lewis, Casey Carlson

A surprise star in new Blake Lewis video

Blake Lewis

So, I checked out the video for Blake Lewis’ new single, “Sad Song,” Tuesday afternoon because it’s a catchy song and I wanted to see what “film noir meets the 1980s” looks like.

After all, that’s what he promised in a teaser leading up to today’s video release.

What the teaser didn’t mention was that the video features a dark-haired beauty who will be quite familiar to Idol fans — season eight semifinalist Casey Carlson.

Now why would he want to keep that a secret?

Since Idol, Casey has landed a role as an on-air personality with the CW network in the Twin Cities. You can go here to learn more about that. Or check out her MySpace page, where you’ll find some post-Idol music, too.

Casey CarlsonMeanwhile, nice song, nice video and nice bit of casting, Blake. Best of luck with the album (”Heartbreak on Vinyl,” due out Oct. 6).

I’ve always found myself rooting for Blake since that season five finale fiasco, where he was forced to sing a coronation song that just didn’t fit his musical style. (But fit eventual winner Jordin Sparks just fine.)

And I’ll always root for the talented season eight semifinalists, like Casey. Too many of them got swallowed up in a numbers game and a format change that robbed viewers of a chance to make a fair determination on who belonged among Idol’s final 13 in 2009.

Hope you learned from that mistake, Idol. I’d hate to see a repeat in season nine.

Meanwhile, here’s the link to the video. Enjoy.
