Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Idols on the Music Chart

Adam lands at number 1 on the Billboard 200

Hey, Idol trivia buffs, anyone know when one former Idol contestant replaced another atop the Billboard 200?

How about the last time an Idol runner-up had a second album debut at number one?

Both just happened.

Today, Billboard announced that Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert’s “Trespassing” was the best-selling album in the land over the past week with sales of about 77,000.

In scoring his first number one, Adam bumped Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” from atop the Billboard 200, where it had been the past two weeks. Carrie’s now at number three.

Carrie’s new album sold 267,000 copies in its first week and about 120,000 in week number two, according to Billboard.com. Last week, it sold 54,000 copies.

Compared to “Trespassing,” Adam actually had better first-week sales (198,000) with his 2009 debut “For Your Entertainment.”

But that was only good enough for third on the Billboard 200 behind Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” and Andrea Bocelli’s “My Christmas.”

Congrats to Adam just the same, because sophomore albums have been something of a jinx for Idols of late.

And with “Trespassing,” he’s proven that a former Idol male contestant really can release a relevant pop album.

Oh, and by the way, Billboard says this is the first time ever one Idol has bumped another from the top of the chart.
