And here’s precisely why The Voice should feature more former contestants on the show.

I made sure to check the iTunes chart before last night’s show for Alisan Porter’s new single, “Deep Water.”

Though it deserved to be, it was nowhere in the Top 200. Not on the overall singles chart. Not even on the pop singles chart.

Then Alisan showed up on The Voice and graced us with a resounding performance of “Deep Water.”

Presto.

Twenty-four hours later, the song is number 59 on the iTunes Top 200. It’s number 18 on the site’s pop singles chart.

That’s what a difference maker appearing on the show can be.

The confounding question is: Why does it happen so seldom?

Why does the show insist on bring in z easy — or whatever his name is — as a featured artist?

Why, next week, is the show bringing in Charlie Puth and Maren Morris — two more artists who need no help selling music right now — when its own alum are releasing fabulous music and need help spreading the word.

Look, The Voice has started an After the Voice video series. They seem totally random (why not feature the folks who just released new music?) and my guess is they’ll end when Season 12 ends, but it’s a major step in the right direction.

Ah, but here’s the bottom line: The most popular of those videos has 200,000 views.

Tuesday’s episode of The Voice was viewed by nearly 9 million people.

Quite a difference, huh?

Just look at Alisan’s chart numbers.

Look, Voice producers, if you need help with a guest list, I’m more than willing. Past finalists Dia Frampton and The Swon Brothers have great new music out. So does RaeLynn, who’s always been a show/Blake Shelton favorite.

Two of my favorite recent discoveries are new EPs from Gigi Rich (Gianna Salvato on the show) and Gabriel Wolfchild (and the Northern Lights).

Yep, even artist who didn’t make the finals on The Voice are releasing great music. Imagine that.

And, imagine this, Voice producers: They need help spreading the word.

But next week, what do we get?

Performances by Charlie Puth and Maren Morris.

With all the great music your former contestants are releasing, that’s maddening.

Absolutely, maddening.
