The American Idol country showdown lots of fans were anticipating next week between Will Moseley and Triston Harper won’t happen.

In a somewhat shocking outcome Sunday night, Triston was sent home while Will advanced along with Abi Carter and Jack Blocker.

And that outcome came even after the 15-year-old country phenom from Alabama turned in two more solid performances on Disney Night, when he performed “Almost There” and “Life is a Highway.”

His stage presence was particularly effective on the jazzy “Almost There,” which had Idol judge Katy Perry proclaiming Triston was already “there.”

Triston’s stage presence — and his vocal skills — impressed throughout his run on the show. So much so that Lionel Richie said he wanted to check his birth certificate.

Triston’s Idol fans can take solace in one bit of good news. After Sunday’s show, Triston posted a message on social media announcing that his single “H.O.P.E.” would be released on Friday.

Triston performed the song on Top 20 night, and it was one of his absolute best performances on the show.

Fans, meanwhile, were clearly surprised by his ouster on Sunday. Here’s a sampling of comments from this blog’s Facebook page.

* Darlene Gauger: “So Sad that he did not make it in the top three But he will have a great future God Bless him ❤🙏”

* Nadine Bryant: “I can’t believe you did not make it through tonight. Grrr”

* Edith Henson: “Triston Harper is a star. I pray to God the almighty that he continues this journey in music. I would love to sit in that audience.”

* Cathey Tarleton: “BRING BACK TRISTON!”

Here’s a look back at Triston’s Idol performances prior to Sunday night
