One of the most successful American Idol’s ever will join the judging panel for Season 23 next year.
American Idol announced Thursday that Carrie Underwood will be joining Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie as a judge for the show’s 8th season on ABC.
Carrie, of course, won Season 4 of Idol back in 2005 and went on to become a country music superstar.
She’ll be replacing Katy Perry, who has been judging alongside Luke and Lionel since the show premiered on ABC in 2018.
Here’s betting Carrie will be well-received by fans.
The show’s wackiness potential might drop a notch. For instance, I can’t see Carrie dropping to all four on the judges table for a moo-off with Luke Bryan, as Katy did in Season 22.
But she’s also likely to come across as a bit more modest than Katy, who would typically show up at the live shows in “look-at-me, look-at-me” attire.
Idol is rightfully thrilled to bring Carrie back to the show.
“Carrie Underwood is the first ‘American Idol’ alum ever to join the judging panel,” noted Megan Wolflick, showrunner and executive producer of Idol in a press statement.
”Her global superstar status as the most successful ‘Idol’ winner to date makes her a perfect fit for the show. She embodies the true spirit of ‘Idol’ as she herself is the definition of the Cinderella story.
“Our future hopefuls will have the chance to receive advice from someone who has walked in their exact footsteps every step of the way. Carrie has always been a strong supporter of ‘Idol,’ and I’m thrilled for her to be reunited with our ‘Idol’ family.”
The announcement comes just as Idol is kicking off virtual state-by-state auditions for Season 23.

I haven’t watched American Idol in years. I might tune in to see how she does.
I definitely think she would be a hit to the (asset) show. Who better be other than a Super former American Idol!!!
The last winner of “American Idol” to have a successful, lasting career was Phillip Phillips. (Season 11).
He later successfully sued 19E to get out of his contract.
LOL! As far as success, I would rank him much, much lower than Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood.
I got to thinking since I posted. If the show is still being shown on Sunday nights, I have conflicts with some Masterpiece series I watch on PBS.
