After Gen. Larry Platt performed “Pants on the Ground” Wednesday night, even the normally caustic Simon Cowell couldn’t help smiling and admitting, “I have a horrible feeling that song could be a hit.”
Unfortunately for Platt, he doesn’t have a recorded version ready to market.
Which is a shame, because his performance at the end of the Atlanta audition show certainly created a buzz. Just imagine the downloads if he did.
And lots of others are getting into the act. PopEater has compiled eight remixes of the song from YouTube. That was as of Thursday. There are probably lots more by now. You can go here to listen.
Then Jimmy Fallon decided to do an impression of Neil Young singing “Pants on the Ground.” One version on YouTube, with 27,000 views, has already been removed by NBC.
Here’s a link to another pretty high quality version. Better watch it while it’s still available. Let’s just say Jimmy Fallon makes a good Neil Young.
As for Larry Platt, he really isn’t a general. He considered himself a general of the civil rights movement, according to Rodney Ho’s “American Idol Buzz” blog in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Ho interviewed Larry. Go here to read the interview. Larry says “Pants on the Ground” was inspired three years ago when he saw a man walking down an Atlanta street with a baby in his arms and his pants slipping below his hips.
This isn’t the first time Larry’s been in the spotlight. Rodney Ho also reports that the Georgia General Assembly proclaimed Sept. 4, 2001 “Larry Platt Day” “for his great energy and commitment to equality and the protection of the innocent and for his outstanding service to the Atlanta community and the citizens of Georgia.”
Of course, I doubt nearly as many people were watching or paying attention as Wednesday night when he closed Idol’s show. If you missed the performance, or would just like to see it again, here it is.
