The Associated Press is quoting a confidential source as saying that Kelly Clarkson will sing the national anthem at the Feb. 5 Super Bowl in Indianapolis.
The league is expected to make an official announcement later this month.
AP is also reporting that Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton will perform “America the Beautiful” during the pre-game ceremony.
If all this is truth, kudos to whoever made the selections for good musical taste.
Although it’s a bit ironic that, in this case, the original Idol will be following in the footsteps of her successors on the show.
In fact, an Idol product has performed the national anthem at three of the last four Super Bowls, including Carrie Underwood in 2010, Jennifer Hudson in 2009 and Jordin Sparks in 2008.
The streak was broken last year when Christina Aguilera, soon to become a judge on The Voice, did the honors.
It certainly won’t be the first high-profile anthem gig for Kelly. Just two years ago, Kelly sang the anthem prior to game three of the World Series when her home-state Texas Rangers were playing San Francisco.
