Critics rave over Fantasia’s ‘Side Effects of You’
We’ll have to wait until Thursday to see where Fantasia’s new album lands on the Billboard 200. But critics seem to love “Side Effects of You,” the fourth album from American Idol’s Season 3 winner.

To say Season 11 Idol runner-up Jessica Sanchez has a good bit going on these days would be a bit of an understatement. I can’t recall any other Idol finalists whose debut album was timed to coincide with her appearance on a hit TV show.
They snagged a spot on The Voice via the blind auditions. They survived the battle round. Next up for the surviving Season 4 contestants on The Voice: The knockout round.
Her audition: Sasha Allen, 30, of New York, auditioned with the Dixie Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice,” though she’s not a country singer. She got through the first verse without a single coach turning around. Then all four did when her voice soared on the chorus. She chose Team Adam.
Her audition: Judith Hill, 28, of Los Angeles, auditioned with “What a Girl Wants.” Adam Levine called it the first time someone on the show sang a Christina Augilera song as well as Christina. All four judges turned their chairs, but Judith joined Team Adam.
His audition: Warren Stone, 31, of Hanna, S.C., auditioned with the Zac Brown Band’s “Colder Weather.” Adam Levine turned around almost instantly, followed by Shakira and, near the end of the song, Blake. Warren, somewhat surprisingly, joined Team Adam.
Her audition: Tawnya Reynolds, 33, of Nashville, auditioned with Willie Nelson’s “Mama, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys.” Early in her performance, Adam and Shakira turned around almost simultaneously. Usher turned around late. Blake Shelton, the country coach, stayed put. After Shakira whipped out an English to Country dictionary, Tawnya decided to…
Actually, Ryan, it doesn’t qualify as a surprise if everyone knew it was going to happen since Monday. I’m talking about Thursday’s results show on American Idol, of course. In what was billed as a dramatic twist, Idol decided to send no one home Thursday night.
Earlier this week, I wrote ‘don’t worry, be happy” because American Idol had its singer shortage under control. After being infuriated by last night’s one-sided, the sun-shines-only-on-Amber critiques, I’ve decided to take that very attitude into tonight’s show.
Maybe, just maybe, American Idol’s ratings are in a nosedive because of the show’s blatant attempts to manipulate the outcome. Never was it more apparent than Wednesday night.
Luck of the Draw
Laci Kaye Booth, Top 5 on American Idol Season 17, recently dropped a new single. And if you somehow missed her 2024 album, "Loneliest Girl in the World," do yourself a favor and check it out!
