Social media numbers for the Top 8 on The Voice indicate what the show’s fans probably already know.

Billy Gilman of Team Adam Levine and Wé McDonald of Team Alicia Keys have an excellent shot at making next week’s Season 11 finale.

Billy is the social media leader on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. On Twitter and Facebook, he has nearly twice as many followers and fan as his nearest competitor on The Voice.

But remember, he came to the show with an already established fan base.

Perhaps more impressive are the numbers for Wé, who didn’t enjoy that luxury. Yet she now has 18,600 followers on Twitter. Sundance Head has the third most on the show and lags 2,000 behind her.

How important are the the social media numbers?

Well, I began tracking social media numbers in Season 3. Since then every winner of The Voice but one has ranked first or second in Twitter followers heading into the semifinals.

The lone exception: Josh Kaufman, who ranked dead last in Twitter support among the Top 5 in Season 6.

In particular, Twitter support will likely help determine who gets the fourth spot in the finals.

Remember, this week three contestants will be voted into next week’s Top 4.

If The Voice follows the format from past season, the lowest two vote-getters will automatically be eliminated.

That means the three who aren’t eliminated will have to compete for Season 11’s last Twitter save. It’s possible that could include Wé; she was only fifth in last week’s rankings on Twitter. It could also include Ali Caldwell, who’d be in a far less favorable position to get the save with the least Twitter support among the Top 8.

The following are social media numbers are of midnight Friday for each contestant. The links will take you to their various social media accounts.
