Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson were among the Grammy nominees announced this morning.
Over the years, former Idol contestants have won 13 Grammy awards; seven of those wins belong to Carrie, three to Kelly.
For 2016, Kelly is nominated for best pop vocal album for “Piece by Piece.” Her competition includes “1989” by Taylor Swift, “Before This World” by James Taylor, “Uptown Special” by Mark Ronson and “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” by Florencre + The Machine.
She’s also nominated for best pop solo performance for “Heartbeat Song.” Other nominees include Ellie Goulding with “Love Me Like You Do,” Ed Sheeran with “Thinking Out Loud,” Taylor Swift with “Blank Space” and The Weeknd with “Can’t Feel My Face.”
Carrie’s nomination comes in the category of best country solo performance fr “Little Toy Guns.” Among her competitors for that honor: Idol judge Keith Urban and his hit “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16.” The other nominees: Cam with “Burning House,” Chris Stapleton with “Traveller” and Lee Ann Womack with “Chances Are.”
For those who don’t cringe at her fleeting Idol connection, it’s worth noting that Nicki Minaj is up for three Grammys — best rap album (“The Pinkprint), best rap collaboration (“Only” with Drake, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown) and best rap performance (“Truffle Butter”).
The Grammys will air Feb. 15 on CBS. For the full list of nominees, head here.
