Carrie Underwood picked to sing national anthem at Super Bowl

Carrie UnderwoodAmerican Idol will have a presence at next Sunday’s Super Bowl in Miami, even if the game isn’t being televised on FOX.

CBS just announced that Carrie Underwood will sing the national anthem.

Great news for Carrie, who’s up for yet another Grammy award Sunday night. (Check back then, I’ll be blogging live and posting photos of Idols and non-idols throughout the show).

And her new album has done very well on the charts, hitting number one on both the Billboard 200 and Billboard’s country album chart.

That makes it two straight Super Bowl national anthems for the Idols. Jennifer Hudson did the honors at last year’s game in Tampa.

And it follows an NFL championship weekend in which season six winner Jordin Sparks sang the anthem in Indianapolis and season eight Kris Allen performed the song in New Orleans.

Carrie’s selection isn’t all that surprising. Between award shows, interviews and Christmas specials, she’s been all over TV since the November release of “Play On.” And she’ll make a guest appearance on the CBS hit “How I Met Your Mother” later this year.

Good thing Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys didn’t make the Super Bowl, right? Carrie might not have accepted the national anthem gig if they had.

Just joking, Carrie.
