The finals, The X Factor

Dexter says he cut a deal to leave X Factor

1

In an interview published today, Dexter Haygood told The Associated Press he cut a deal to leave The X Factor last week.

Dexter said he’s a rock-and-roll singer. But instead of rocking out on The X Factor, he found himself singing songs like Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.”

After expressing his concern with mentor Nicole Scherzinger, Dexter told The Associated Press he cut a deal to leave the show in return for an agreement that he return for the season finale.

Parts of what Dexter told The Associated Press ring true, especially if you’ve watched these televised singing competitions in the past.

He says The X Factor producers became fixated with portraying him as the homeless contestant.  You can read the full AP story here.

But Dexter’s story about an agreement to leave the show might ring more true if it hadn’t been for his rather bizarre reaction to being eliminated last week.

Most of the contestants thanked the show for the exposure it gave them.   Business savvy Simone Battle used the moment to promote her “He Likes Boys” video (as an aside, it’s cute — check it out here).

Dexter?  Here’s what he said:  “I’m kinda confused.  I don’t know why I’m confused.  I’m kind of in a boggle zone.  The 21st Century twilight zone.”

Hmm.  And if I recall correctly, Dexter broke down in tears every time he was on camera, talking about his difficult past and his chance for X Factor redemption.

Regardless of how it happened, Dexter was the obvious choice to leave among the Over 30s last week.  He was the most flamboyant performer, for sure.  He was also the weakest vocally.

Then there was this assessment from Nicole after Dexter performed last week:  “I’m so proud of you, Dexter.  You remembered your lyrics.”

Then she looked skyward and mouthed:  “Thank you, God.”
