If there was any doubt about it, yes, American Idol will be back for Season 13.
And don’t assume there will be all new faces on the judging panel.
That was the news today from Kevin Reilly, chairman of entertainment with FOX Broadcasting Co., as FOX announced its 2013 lineup.
Reilly said the assessment of what to do about bolstering the ratings for American Idol will begin Friday, as soon as Season 12 ends.
What you’re most likely to see are widespread format changes.
For instance, Reilly said ratings in Season 12 really tumbled during a three-week period in the middle of the season (I think he meant the Vegas round and perhaps Hollywood Week) where Idol split the guys and gals.
“The format, more than anything, will have a few fresh twists that I think will bring a nice little jolt next season,” Reilly said.
Randy Jackson has already announced that he’ll be departing at the end of the season.
As for Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey?
Asked if they’d be welcome back for Season 13, Reilly said “absolutely” before adding that “anything is on the table” as the network looks to bolster the show.
Reilly did add — hallelujah — that Idol is likely to return to a panel of three judges next year.
