Apparently, American Idol ran out of original theme ideas after one week.
So next Wednesday, we’ll be treated to songs from the Lennon-McCartney songbook.
Plus some Jessica Sanchez. More on that in a moment.
To be fair, Idol hasn’t treated us to a night of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and music from The Beatles since Season 9.
That was the night Casey James got rave reviews for his rendition of “Jealous Guy” and Michael Lynche needed saving after singing “Eleanor Rigby.”
The Beatles was also a theme back in Season 7 when David Archuleta amazed with “The Long and Winding Road” and Carly Smithson’s version of “Blackbird” sparked a silly Simon-spurred debate over sparrows and broken wings.
If Idol needed an idea for another first-ever theme, I would have suggested one offered up by several fans of the show — songs by past Idol contestants who didn’t win.
But I would have limited it to songs recorded after they left the show to limit the number of ballads we’ve heard over and over and over again.
Now, as for Jessica, she’ll perform on next week’s results show with Ne-Yo.
That means we’re about to hear her first post-Idol single, “Tonight.” And probably means it will also be released soon.
Here’s Jessica talking to MTV about the song and about working with Ne-Yo.
