We didn’t get to meet George Lovett in American Idol’s Atlanta audition episode.

But we found out why he made the semifinals last week, when he turned in one of the stellar vocals among male contestants on the last night in Hollywood, singing “I Won’t Give Up.”

Turns out the song title was appropriate.

The guy from Baltimore, Md., says he returned to Idol looking for a bit of redemption in Season 13.

He’s been trying out for the show since 2007, he told his local TV station, and this year marked his fourth time auditioning.

As for that audition, George says in his Road to Hollywood video that he and three friends auditioned together, singing “Georgia On My Mind” to welcome the judges to Atlanta.

George doesn’t say what happened to the friends in terms of their golden ticket fortunes, but says he told the judges that he was back and determined to win this year.

Their response: He says they told him he has the voice to be an idol but needs to work on his expression and charisma.

George says his musical inspirations include Brandy and Patti LaBelle.

“I think what makes me unique is I bring an urban type of rhythm and blues, soulful, pop type of thing to the competition,” he says. “I want to bring that Frank Ocean, cool, up-to-date kind of thing (to the competition).”
