M.K. Nobilette was part of a montage of three singers shown during American Idol’s Thursday night episode from San Francisco.

The 20-year-old resident of that city says he was encouraged to audition by his aunt, who is a big-time fan of the show.

M.K. auditioned with Gladys Knight and the Pips’ “If I Were Your Woman.” And though the decision wasn’t unanimous, M.K. is Hollywood bound.

“J-Lo said no,” M.K. says during a Road to Hollywood video, “but she also gave me a lot of constructive criticism, so hopefully I can bring it back and, next time, show her something else.”

M.K. says a “lower-set” voice filled with rasp and soul might help set her apart in the competition. As for a musical inspiration: Allen Stone.

“I think we both have this thing where people look at us and then we open our mouth and sing and they’re like, ‘What? That came out of you?’ I like that about him, too.

“Singing is really the only thing that I want to do that really makes me happy,” M.K. adds.
