Shubha Vedula beat half the American Idol judges to the audition room in Long Beach.

Nicki Minaj was off rehearsing for the American Music Awards and Mariah Carey was stuck in traffic when Shubha walked in, clearly surprised to find the judges’ table half empty.

“Are you disappointed?” Randy asked.

“No, this is amazing right now,” Shubha responded, smiling wide.

Then Shubha launched into “Something’s Got a Hold on Me.” And no one was disappointed.

Lots of female contestants on Idol say people are taken aback by their big voices. Shubha displayed one.

And, even if they had trouble with her name, she was off to Hollywood in a heartbeat.
