Blake enticed 17-year-old Carson Peters, young fiddler extraordinare and front man for a bluegrass band, to join Team Blake.
Meanwhile, the show ended on a cliffhanger after Holly Forbes turned four chairs with a brilliant cover of “Rocket Man.”
Monday’s show also confirmed that two former American Idol standouts — Raquel Trinidad and Jeremy Rosado — will compete on Season 21 of The Voice.
Here’s a recap of Monday’s show, with my picks for top performances of the night.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
Holly Forbes, 30, Catlettsburg, Ken., “Rocket Man” by Elton John: Holly’s opening prompted immediate chair turns from Kelly, Ariana and John. Blake joined them too even before Holly reached the chorus. Ariana had successfully blocked John. Blake said it’s clear Holly is an “artist.” Ariana called the performance “moving.” John called Holly’s cover “compelling.” Kelly loved the way Holly got lost in the song. Holly opted to join … we won’t find out until Tuesday night!
RUNNERS-UP
Keilah Grace, 15, Staten Island, N.Y., “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS: Kelly turned midway through Keilah’s soulful performance. And her big voice eventually prompted chair turns from John and Ariana too. John said he sees tons of potential in Keilah. Kelly said she loved the passion in Keilah’s voice. Ariana appreciated her soul and depth and noted she began her career around Keilah’s range. Keilah opted to join Team Legend. That young lady reminds me a lot of Season 5 runner-up Jacquie Lee.
Samara Brown, 32, Bronx, N.Y., “Sweet Thing”: John turned quickly, followed shortly after by Ariana. And those turns looked better when Samara’s vocals soared. John said Samara “killed it” and he loved the way she “wailed” at the end. Ariana tried to block John, but he turned too quickly. Ariana called her performance “perfect from start to finish.” Samara opted to join Team John.
ALSO MADE THE SHOW
Raquel Trinidad, 23, Tampa, Fla., “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder: Raquel immediately shows her comfort on stage. John turned when she hit the chorus. Ariana followed soon after. Her sassy vocal enticed a turn from Kelly as well. Ariana said she was moved by Raquel’s performance. John liked her super soulful runs and the versatility in Raquel’s voice. Raquel joined Team Ariana.
The Joy Reunion, Redlands, California, “”Boondocks” by Little Big Town: Blake turned as soon as they hit the chorus. John followed soon after. John said the trio was “so fun to listen to.” Blake touts his success on the show with country artists. The Joy Reunion, including veteran musicians Robert Easley, Gentry Monreal and Neil Morrison, joined Team Blake. I’m loving the fact that there are so many talented groups on Season 21.
Hailey Mia, 13, Clifton, N.J., “you broke me first” by Tate McRae: In spite of a very impressive vocal from Hailey, Kelly didn’t turn until the final notes. Ariana promptly followed. Kelly said she thought she was turning for a 24 year old. She was especially impressed by Hailey’s combination of power and control. Ariana predicted Hailey will flourish on the show. Hailey opted to join Team Ariana.
Jeremy Rosado, 29, Tampa, Fla., “Here Comes Goodbye” by Rascal Flatts: Jeremy’s vocals soared as he put his own stamp on a country song. He got late chair turns from Kelly and Blake. Kelly called him “overwhelmingly talented” as a vocalist. Blake said he loved the fact that Jeremy continued to work hard for a chair turn even when it didn’t come immediately. Jeremy decided to join Team Kelly.
Carson Peters, 17, Piney Flats, Tenn., “Tulsa Time” by Eric Clapton: John turned just as Carson reached the chorus. Blake turned when he finished the first run-through of that chorus. Kelly and Ariana eventually followed, giving Carson the fourth four-chair turn of Season 21. Kelly said she loves his voice and said his fiddle would be welcome on her team. Ariana called his performance “so enjoyable.” Blake said he was “very impressed” with Carson’s performance. Carson decided to join Team Blake.
