Idol finals week 4: A petulant Simon Cowell?

Wow, was it just me? Or was Simon Cowell being a bit petulant at the end of Wednesday night’s results show?

Just because someone wasn’t crushed by one of his harsh critiques?

It all started earlier in the evening, when Ryan asked Megan Joy how she felt about Simon’s criticism of her performance of “Turn Your Lights Down Low” Tuesday evening.

Megan, who made it clear Tuesday that she was thrilled to get a chance to sing Bob Marley, said, basically, she didn’t care.

So when Ryan announced Megan was the low vote getter, the gal with a tattoo of a castle up her right arm suddenly found her fate in the hands of the judges.

Would they use their precious save on her?

Simon killed the suspense. “With greatest respect,” he told Megan, “when you said you don’t care, nor do we.”

Ah, with greatest respect. Okay.

Still sounded petulant to me.

Check back tomorrow for the exit interview with Megan.

The outfit that nearly spelled disaster for Allison IrahetaAnyway, the big news of the night in my mind wasn’t that Megan Joy is heading home. It was that Allison Iraheta wound up in the bottom three.

Better watch what you wear, Allison.

Here’s the recap.

Deserved her fate: Well, that would be Megan. I mean, no one really expected the judges to save her. Did they? And she was not a threat to win this competition. Still, I would like to have seen Anoop Desai, Matt Giraud or Scott MacIntyre take the fall this week. We still have too many similar singers in this competiton, folks.

Very, very lucky: Scott MacIntyre, who somehow got by with a copycat peformance this week that wasn’t nearly as good as Billy Joel’s original. It’s the type of performance that normally gets a contestant roasted by the judges. Instead, they gave Scott a pass. How long can he survive on so-so vocals?

Stock rising: For the second straight week, I’d put Kris Allen in this spot. I mean, this guy got absolutely minimal air time prior to the semifinals. Then he made the finals. And he’s done nothing but improve since then. And you have to like the guy’s attitude, like when he was poking fun at himself when talking about photographers who want him to give the camera a sexy look. Right now, I’d classify Kris as a possible candidate for this year’s finale.

I could put Adam Lambert here, too. But when you’ve established yourself as the clear favorite in the competition … well, it’s a little tough for your stock to climb any higher than that.

Stock sinking: Matt Giraud falls into this category. I haven’t heard a special performance from him yet. And that’s something Anoop delivered at least once. (Remember his version of Willie Nelson’s “You’re Always on My Mind.”) I’m just not sure Matt possesses the vocal prowess to go deep into this competition. Another candidate for this category, Lil Rounds. When, oh when, will she turn in that special performance? Still waiting.

Underappreciated: A new category, created just for Allison Iraheta. I don’t care what she wears, how red her hair is or how funky her hair style is. She has been easily the best female performer in this competition to date. At the tender age of 16. What in the heck was she doing in the bottom three, voters? Pay attention. She’s worth keeping around. I’d rank her fourth in the competition without hesitation.

On the bubble: That would be Anoop, who keeps wanting to act like a R&B hunk, but simply can’t pull it off. “My Prerogative,” followed by “Beat It,” followed by an Usher song. Keep going down that path, Anoop, and it will lead in one direction … back to your home in North Carolina.

Whose stock is rising on Idol? That would be Kris Allen
