Way to build the drama on American Idol Wednesday night, right?

First Ryan Seacrest warns us to expect surprising results. Then he hauls the three gals still in the competition to center stage.

With the way female contestants have been getting voted off the show this season, how many other people out there thought one of the females might be in danger of going home?

Instead, it turned out the surprise was watching front-runner Michael Lynche land in the bottom three; then have to sing for his Idol life to dodge elimination.

He was successful, thanks to the one and only save the judges can use in season nine.

I still don’t think they should have used it, but they did, which sets up a dramatic week five in which two contestants will be voted off Idol.

Plus we got performances from David Archuleta (‘Imagine’ sounded just as good the second time) and Rihanna (I wasn’t a big fan of her “Rockstar 101,” but it was certainly an energetic performance.
