Idol plans 10th anniversary album; who got snubbed?

27

Adam Lambert is among the non-winners featured on the American Idol, 10th anniversary, compilation album. (AP Photo)American Idol has announced plans for a 10th anniversary album, set for a March 15 release.

The album will feature tracks from each of the first nine Idol winners, plus three additional tracks.

Those will come from Daughtry (“Home”),  Clay Aiken (“Invisible”) and Adam Lambert (“Whataya Want from Me”).

Now, it’s tough to dispute the inclusion of any of the three.

Chris Daughtry has become the best-selling Idol contestant who didn’t make the finals.

In the aftermath of season two, it seemed Clay was more popular than Ruben.

And Grammy-nominated Adam might be the most popular former Idol contestant not named Kelly or Carrie right about now.

But let’s look at who was left out …

* Jennifer Hudson, who’s about to release her second album and whose first won a Grammy.

* Crystal Bowersox, who’s debut seems certain to outperform the one released by season nine winner Lee DeWyze.

* And David Archuleta, a favorite from season seven whose first album went gold and who still has an incredibly loyal fan base.

Of course, before we get too concerned about who was snubbed on this album, officially dubbed “American Idol — 10th Anniversary — The Hits,” let’s keep this in mind.

The article posted on the americanidol.com site also includes the words, “Vol. 1.”

In other words, there might be more to come.

My suggestion for “Vol. 2” — a compilation of bonus tracks released by the most popular Idols over the years.

After all, the most avid Idol fans will already own most of the tracks on volume one. At least the ones from the Idols they follow.

But lots of us have missed out on bonus tracks over the years, like the extra songs released on the deluxe version of Kelly Clarkson’s “All I Ever Wanted” CD.

Now that would be a compilation album worth owning.

Meanwhile, the tracks on Vol. 1 …

1. Kelly Clarkson – “Since U Been Gone”
2. Ruben Studdard – “Superstar”
3. Clay Aiken – “Invisible”
4. Fantasia – “When I See U”
5. Carrie Underwood – “Before He Cheats”
6. Taylor Hicks – “Takin’ It To The Streets”
7. Daughtry – “Home”
8. Jordin Sparks (duet with Chris Brown) – “No Air”
9. David Cook – “Light On”
10. Kris Allen – “Live Like We’re Dying”
11. Adam Lambert – “Whataya Want From Me”
12. Lee DeWyze – “Sweet Serendipity”

Forrest Gump says it all. Stupid is as stupid does. One thing I don’t understand is why the smash hit, ‘Crush’, selling 2 million copies, is not on the CD. It’s #1 hit song by AOL out of all idol songs. AI has reason why the show is struggling because they don’t know how to make money.

Clay Aiken is so much more than “it seemed Clay was more popular than Ruben.”. He has sold over 7 million albums, starred on Broadway, headlined 13 Tours, Recorded 6 albums and wrote a New York Times Bestselling book. He is a UNICEF Ambassador and has out-sold everyone except Kelly Carrie and Daughtry.

Hey, I’m not trying to knock Clay or his accomplishments. Heck, he was just honored by being chosen to sing the national anthem at the NHL all-star game. I was saying his inclusion on this CD made sense. I just don’t understand why there could not have been a few more tracks so other deserving past contestants could be included too. Especially if this was designed to be some sort of comprehensive 10th anniversary album.

Yeah, nice of them to leave out “Crush”, just like they conveniently manage to leave David out of everything else. (Oops, did I say that?) “Crush” has sold almost 2 million…hellooooo? Uggh, don’t even get me started.

WTHeck!!! Why is “Crush” being left off this cd?!?!

Jennifer Hudson has no hits that is why she might not have been included. Yes she has a great movie career but a music career, not so much. “Spotlight is her only minor hit.

And Crystal Bowersox’s album has not been released yet as far as I know

Crystal’s album is out. “Farmer’s Daughter” is among the best songs written and recorded by an American Idol to date.

I can’t believe that David Archuleta’s Crush was not on this album. Crush sold over 2 million. I am not buying this CD.

So they leave out a 2million selling hit (Crush) by davidarchie???? Why archie continues to say such positive and well thought-out things about everyone connected to Idol when asked by the press is beyond me. Not one time has he been anything but supportive of the show and yet it is almost like they don’t want him to be known as successful which he is. I don’t get it.

I’m sure the producers would have liked to have added a few more songs but this selection was most likely pure economics. When a song is selected for an album there are a lot of people that have to be paid. The more songs on the album, the more money that must be paid out. And there’s a limit to what consumers will pay for an album. So, in order for the album to be profitable there has to be a limit to the number of songs. And 12 songs appeared to be the limit.

    • Mark Franklin February 4, 2011 at 3:38 am -  Reply

You might have a point about economics and being limited in the number of songs because, quite honestly, I don’t see widespread demand for this album. Fans of each particular artist certainly already have those tracks. And if you don’t have those tracks by now, it’s probably because they don’t appeal to you. I think they would have done much better rounding up some more obscure tracks from their top artists — like I suggested — bonus tracks — tracks fans might have missed — to get some cross exposure for all the artists. It’s nice to put out an album that screams — Look what we’ve done. But if there’s no demand for it, what’s the point.

I do think if someone bothered to check they would find that “Crush” is one of the top selling singles of all times. Certainly more that some on the CD.

I can only surmise that David Archuleta has far exceeded their expectations and they are embarassed to say they messed-up. They also missed an opportunity for more sales of the CD. The disregard for David and his mega-hit single will keep me from checking it out.

David A never reached Superstar status. The press release said the 9 winners plus 3 superstar non-winners.

    • meme February 4, 2011 at 8:21 pm -  Reply

David has reached superstar status. He is in high demand, Christmas concert with 21,000 in attendance 4 days in a row with thousands in stand by, he is adored internationally, his songs are on the charts overseas. New York Times best selling author, he is a great humanitarian bringing awareness and supporting various charities, has made the Forbes top Idol earner list every year since season 7 on idol. And lets not forget Crush is double platinum.

That seems like superstar status to me.

And he has achieved all this with next to none promo.

Where is the original press release? I have never seen the word ‘superstar’ in any articles. What is the definition of superstar, then? Less than selling 1 million album in case of Lambert? Among idols, only Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry may be standing out. Rest of them are about same. But the title of the CD is “Hits”. Crush is one of best seller singles in the history of idol.

I am shocked and appalled that Crush by David Archuleta was left off the anniversary CD. The single has sold over 2 million copies world wide not to mention he has a large and very loyal fan base all over the world. If this isn’t the measure of success I don’t know what is– David has been generous with his fame and has donated a good majority of his time to many charities, recently returning from a trip to India to help the people and children of Rising Star Outreach. He continues to give of himself and yet Idol chooses to ignore his generosity and most of all, his talent. I would really reconsider the tracks on this album and choose to add Crush. If not, I for one will not spend my money and support this album.

I agree…David Archuleta should have been included on this album. Not interested in buying this one.

I am disappointed with american idol! They keep on ignoring david a. and his great talent and his contribution to the success of the show.
Crush is a monster hit. It is still selling and already got sold almost 2 million copies!!!!!!!!! How could they forget to include the song in the album? It’s a mystery to me! Oh well, not gonna buy this album and i will stop watching amer idol! It’s just a waste of my time!

Ever since the year of the two Davids I’ve watched how they were both treated. There is no mistaking that David A was getting the “Clay Aiken” treatment from his label and AI. He wasn’t the winner so after his debut CD and first single he was marginalized by the label and AI. His second CD was a Christmas CD (just like Clay had to do). At least David A wasn’t forced to do a CD of covers for his sophomore CD.

What I don’t understand is why the idol with the most hits, sales, and music awards isn’t the pictured? Carrie is certainly way more successful than Adam. In fact almost everyone on that list has more hits and accomplishents than Adam with the exception of Kris and Lee. Before the glamberts descend to defend their idol, let’s be clear, Adam doesn’t have as much time under his belt and may well outdo all the others in the future, but not at this point in time.

Usually with this type of article the author’s bias is reflected in the way the article is written and featured pictures.

@rusty Adam is the #7 searched person in the world on Google tied with Angelina Jolie, maybe that is why bloggers choose his picture over others? IDK Where is any bias? Carrie is in the article and featured on the album.

Could you have considered David Archuleta’s Crush as a selection for the young ones????

Why is disgusting Lambert’s picture up there? Does American Idol know Lambert makes a lot of people sick? This creep is the reason why people lose interest in AI. He only cares about make-up, fancy clothing, gossips, boyfriend and gay stuff. So sick!
