By now, you probably know Lionel Richie oversaw a re-recording of “We Are the World” on Monday.
What you might not know is that several former American Idol contestants were involved in the process.
Proceeds from the new recording — featuring artists as diverse as Lady Gaga, rapper Lil Wane and Barbra Streisand — will benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti.
“We Are the World — 25 for Haiit” will apparently premiere during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics on NBC.
A chorus of more than 80 singers gathered Monday at Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood — where the original was also cut. According to this report on MTV, Idol participants included Randy Jackson, Jordin
Sparks, Jennifer Hudson and Katharine McPhee (if you look close, you can spot her in the photo above).
Katharine and Jordin sent out tweets about the experience. Here’s what they had to say:
Katharine: “The We Are The World remake is a history making event. I can’t believe I’m a part of it!”
Jordin: “Being apart of the We Are The World remake is such an honor. So much talent together for a great cause. I will never forget tonight.”
No word yet on when the song will be available for download. But The Associated Press reports that the recording process was filmed in 3-D.
